Welcoming Your Child with Tradition

Welcoming New Life into the Covenant

Few moments in life are as precious as welcoming a new child into the world. In Jewish tradition, this sacred time is marked with ceremonies that honor the beauty of creation, the blessings of family, and the covenant of our community.

B’rit Milah (Circumcision Ceremony) – A Boy’s Eighth Day

The B’rit Milah, or circumcision ceremony, traditionally takes place on the eighth day after a boy’s birth. Surrounded by family, the mohel performs the circumcision as a rabbi leads the family in blessings and gratitude. This moment reflects on:

  • The Wonder of Creation: A time to pause and appreciate life’s blessings.

  • The Future Ahead: Celebrating the joy of a new chapter for the family.

  • Gratitude: A heartfelt moment to express thankfulness for life’s miracles.

The baby boy’s Hebrew name is often given at this time, symbolizing his entry into the Jewish covenant.

Simchat Bat – Celebrating the Birth of a Daughter

For a baby girl, many families choose to celebrate with a Simchat Bat, a ceremony meaning "Joy of a Daughter." While this ritual is more modern, its essence is deeply rooted in tradition. Families may hold this ceremony:

  • On the eighth day after birth for a parallel to the B’rit Milah, or

  • Later, when the family is ready to gather and celebrate.

The Simchat Bat includes blessings and prayers reflecting on the traditional roles and values in a Jewish home. It is a beautiful opportunity to honor the wonder of creation and the joy of raising a daughter within the Jewish community.

Naming Ceremonies in the Synagogue

Families may choose to bring their celebrations to the synagogue for a more public acknowledgment of their child’s birth.

  • For a boy, the father is often called to the Torah the first time it is read after birth to announce the baby’s Hebrew name. This can be followed by the B’rit Milah a few days later.

  • For a girl, families often wait a few weeks for the Simchat Bat ceremony. Parents and baby are called to the Bema, where blessings are recited, and the child’s Hebrew name is formally announced.

These synagogue ceremonies bring loved ones together, fostering gratitude, celebration, and anticipation for a life rooted in the covenant of the Jewish people.
