Director of Religious School

Sharon Wechter is the Director of the Religious School at Congregation Anshai Torah, having joined the staff in July 2018. She was born in Houston, Texas and raised in El Paso, where she grew up in a Jewishly observant and strongly Zionist family. She began her professional career as a Music Therapist and Clinical Social Worker, and holds a B.S. from New York University, and an M.S.W. from Wurzweiler School of Social Work of Yeshiva University. Additionally, she received an M.A. in Religious Education from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City.

Sharon brings a strong background in the creative arts, family education, and curriculum and professional development to Anshai Torah. She was previously Education Director for synagogues in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland and Texas. She taught at Houston’s Emery Weiner Day School; in addition, she served as Jewish Chaplain at Williams College, and Director of the Board of Jewish Education in Bridgeport, CT. She has written curricula for national organizations including MAZON, Hadassah and Jewish Funds for Justice, and produced her CD, Journey of a Soul, of original Jewish music.

Sharon is married to Rabbi Seymour Rossel. Together they have four children: Rabbi Amy Rossel Ross of Temple Emanuel in Dallas, TX; Professor Debbie Rossel Bradford of Tunxis Community College in Farmington, CT; Rabbi Rachel Maimin of North Shore Synagogue in Syosset, NY; and Benjamin Maimin, Vice President of Opus 3 Artists in New York, NY.

Sharon and Seymour, along with their Bichon Frise, Yofi, are very happy to be joining the Anshai Torah community!
